Bathing suits, shorts, sleeveless shirts, summer’s must-have wardrobe items. You may love them or loath them. Whatever your preference is, we all wouldn’t mind slimming down so our arms and legs look toned and defined when we throw these outfits on for the summer months. I mean who wouldn’t want Jennifer Aniston’s legs and David Beckham’s arms, right?!
During the winter our bodies like to hold on to a little weight for comfort and warmth. We enjoy warm soups, hearty vegetables, and hot cocoa during those cold months. Since we are bundled up in sweaters, scarves, and long jackets, it doesn’t matter if we do gain a few pounds as no one is seeing our arms and legs. All that changes when the heat wave rolls in, and we start shedding the coats and wearing the cut offs.
How do you get rid of those extra pounds that may be lurking around the areas of your body you want to look sleek for summer? Below are 5 simple ways to slim down for summer:
Slim Down Tip Number One:
Eat Seasonal Foods
Summer foods are light and fresh, exactly how you want to feel when you put on that pair of shorts and sleeveless top. Fruits and vegetables are plentiful in the summer, like arugula, cucumbers, tomatoes, carrots, peppers, strawberries, peaches, watermelon, and cherries. All perfectly delicious. All perfectly full of fiber that will help you feel full so you don’t overeat on junk. All perfectly hydrating so your skin has a healthy glow.
Slim Down Tip Number Two:
Eat Foods That Help With Digestion
You want to focus on foods that are high in fiber (like the fruits and vegetables listed above) and foods that promote good digestion so you don’t feel bloated in your bathing suit.
Incorporate foods like sauerkraut, kefir (a fermented dairy product), and ginger to your diet. Top your grilled chicken salad with sauerkraut. Use kefir in your fruit smoothie for a creamy texture. Start your day off with a cup of warm ginger lemon water.
Take a probiotic supplement. Not only will you notice your stomach is less bloated, but you will feel a boost in energy for all those fun summer activities. Probiotics boost your immune system, decrease inflammation in the body, help you lose weight, and improve your skin.
Slim Down Tip Number Three:
Water can help you lose weight by reducing your hunger cravings. Many times when we feel hungry, we are really just dehydrated, especially in the summer when we lose water through our sweat because of the heat. Drinking water consistently throughout the day will reduce those cravings for ice cream or salty chips which make you feel bloated and can undo the hard work you put in during your morning workout session.
Slim Down Tip Number Four:
Limit Salt Intake
Eating salty foods, though so pleasurable in the moment, can really do damage to that slim look you are working hard to achieve. Salt causes our bodies to retain water. When you retain water, your body looks soft, the exact opposite of what you want.
Limit your salt intake by doing the following:
1. Eat out less - restaurants add sodium to most dishes so they taste good and you will keep coming back.2. Eat less processed foods - foods that come in a box or package are usually full of sodium. Choose slices of juicy watermelon instead of several handfuls of Cheez-Its as an afternoon snack.
3. Use less when cooking - try to only add a pinch of salt at the end of cooking and use different herbs like thyme, rosemary, oregano for added flavor.
Slim Down Tip Number Five:
Easier said than done right? Stress can wreak havoc on our weight loss endeavors. It causes high cortisol levels in your body which makes your very hungry so we stress eat, which looks like reaching for that bag of chips or M&Ms, not carrots. These high cortisol levels cause you to store that extra food we ate when we were stressed as fat.
Try reducing your stress by incorporating meditation and prayer into your morning routine. Focus on what is true, beautiful, and lovely, this can settle your mind and spirit. Take a break for some deep breathing during your day along with a few stretches to relieve muscle tension. Make sure you are getting enough sleep, 7 - 9 hours, every night. Sleep is crucial for your body’s renewal against the stress it encountered during the day.
You may feel trying to follow all of these tips may be overwhelming. If so, pick one. You will notice a difference in your body even with concentrating on just one of these goals. I promise!
